The SAMoCA cultural mega-project will reshape Diriyah through a $490 million investment in one of Saudi Arabia’s largest museum developments. The project will introduce a 45,252 m² contemporary art museum in the birthplace of the first Saudi State. Moreover, the development will strengthen Diriyah’s position as a global cultural destination while supporting Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 diversification strategy. Diriyah Company awarded the construction contract to a joint venture between Hassan Allam Construction Saudi Arabia and Albawani Company.
Located within the historic Diriyah masterplan near Riyadh, the museum will become the flagship home of the Saudi Arabia Museum of Contemporary Art, widely known as SAMoCA. The project combines cultural infrastructure, heritage preservation, tourism development, and modern architecture in one integrated destination. Furthermore, the museum will operate alongside the existing SAMoCA exhibition space at the JAX Center in Riyadh’s creative district.
Diriyah continues to emerge as one of the Kingdom’s most ambitious urban transformation projects. Consequently, the new museum will reinforce the city’s role as Saudi Arabia’s cultural capital while attracting international artists, researchers, and visitors.
SAMoCA cultural mega-project strengthens Saudi Arabia’s cultural infrastructure
The SAMoCA cultural mega-project will include 45,252 m² of gross floor area and approximately 77,428 m² of total built-up area. The museum will support exhibitions, cultural research, artistic documentation, and educational programs focused on Saudi modern and contemporary art.
Unlike conventional gallery developments, SAMoCA will function as a national cultural institution. Therefore, the facility will document artistic history while creating new opportunities for Saudi and international collaboration.
Diriyah Company confirmed that the museum forms part of the broader US$63.2 billion Diriyah development program. The masterplan includes museums, hotels, entertainment venues, retail districts, universities, and cultural attractions. In addition, the overall development aims to attract 50 million annual visits and generate more than 180,000 jobs.
The museum also achieved Mostadam Gold certification during both the design and construction stages. As a result, the project ranks among the region’s most sustainability-focused cultural developments.
Jerry Inzerillo, Group CEO of Diriyah Company, stated that the museum will provide Saudi and international artists with a world-class platform. He added that the project will elevate Diriyah’s reputation as the Kingdom’s capital of culture. Saudi Arabia continues to expand its cultural and entertainment construction portfolio across multiple giga-developments, following other landmark projects such as NEOM’s UTAMO project.
SAMoCA cultural mega-project combines heritage architecture with global design expertise
The SAMoCA cultural mega-project brings together regional contractors and international design specialists. Hassan Allam Construction Saudi Arabia and Albawani Company will jointly execute the construction works. Meanwhile, UK-based architectural practice Godwin Austen Johnson designed the museum with support from Rafaat Miller Consulting.
The project team designed the museum to complement Diriyah’s historic architectural identity. Consequently, the development will blend contemporary museum standards with traditional urban character.
Industry observers view the project as a strategic investment in Saudi Arabia’s expanding cultural economy. Furthermore, the museum will strengthen the Kingdom’s international cultural profile while encouraging tourism growth.
The Museums Commission described SAMoCA as a platform that will document and champion Saudi artists across generations. Therefore, the institution will preserve cultural heritage while supporting emerging creative talent.
The construction award also highlights continued momentum across the Diriyah development pipeline. Recently, Diriyah Company awarded additional contracts covering hospitality, civic infrastructure, and mixed-use developments.
Diriyah museum construction positions the city as a global art destination
Saudi Arabia selected Diriyah for the museum because of its deep historical significance. The city served as the birthplace of the first Saudi State during the 18th century. Therefore, the museum connects the Kingdom’s historical foundations with its modern cultural ambitions.
The project carries importance beyond architecture and construction. Instead, it represents a wider effort to position Saudi Arabia within the global creative economy.
The museum will invite international dialogue while promoting Saudi artistic identity. Additionally, the project will create a permanent platform for exhibitions, research initiatives, and cultural exchange.
Construction activity across Diriyah continues to accelerate as the Kingdom advances its long-term tourism and heritage strategies. Consequently, the SAMoCA cultural mega-project now stands among the region’s most significant museum developments.
