The implementation of the $2bn Athletics domed stadium in Las Vegas remains on schedule to open prior to the 2028 season. These remarks were noted by officials yesterday as the project continues to make headway. Club and contractor officials presented their update on the 33,000-person capacity ballpark on Thursday at the Las Vegas Stadium Authority meeting. “The lower-suite level is progressing substantially,” said Tyler Van Eeckhaut, project director for contractors Mortenson-McCarthy.

Moreover, he noted that a lot of rooms are taking shape and “a lot of that environment has really started to become a component of the stadium.” Buttress work has been completed to mark a significant milestone, and the upper deck began going up in April. A parking garage on the southeast side will be phased in with 1,500 lots initially available. However, it is expected to skyrocket to 2,500 by the time construction is completed.

Other Projects

Other sports stadium taking shape include the Arthur Ashe stadium where revamp plans by the USTA are expected as the association seeks $400 million in financing the project plans.  Another significant MLB stadium also advancing is the Tampa Bay Rays ballpark project in Florida. The City council approved the preliminary financing plan that includes millions of public dollars for their new stadium. The 4-3 vote on Thursday followed agreement a day earlier by the Hillsborough County Commission. Conversely, the agreement set the stage for negotiations on a final plan.

Scope of Implementation on the Athletics Domed Stadium in Las Vegas

Despite progress on the Athletics domed stadium in Las Vegas, there are some decisions that have to be made. For instance, the A’s might have to build a temporary plaza on the northwest side. Bally’s Corp. has not yet raised financing for an elevated plaza on the property as part of a $1.19 billion mixed-use project. It includes restaurants, shopping and entertainment, hotel-casino and also a 2,500-seat theater.

The stadium is part of the overall development plan. However, Sandy Dean, A’s vice chairman, said the club is in the process of creating plans so that a plaza will open by the time the first pitch is thrown in the 2028 season. “Those guys (at Bally’s) are doing a lot of things, and we have to remember Bally’s had the vision to bring us to this site,” Dean said. “We and Las Vegas are all going to benefit by being on the Bally’s site. This is just something we’ve got to sort through together with them in the next little bit.”

Steve Hill, CEO and president of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, told the A’s to present a plan regarding the plaza at the next Stadium Authority meeting on Aug. 20. A’s President Marc Badain said the first set of suites that were made available for purchase have sold out. He also noted 80% of the season-ticket packages for the seats behind home plate for what is called the Athletic Club have been sold. He added tickets will begin going on sale to the general public in the coming months.
