Jeddah Airport expansion plans gained momentum after Jeddah Airports Company held high-level talks with Singapore’s Surbana Jurong Group on future infrastructure development at King Abdulaziz International Airport. The discussions support Saudi Arabia’s broader aviation transformation strategy under Vision 2030, which aims to position Jeddah as a major global transit and logistics hub while expanding airport capacity, cargo operations, and international connectivity.

The strategic meeting brought together Jeddah Airports Company CEO Eng. Mazen bin Mohammed Johar and Surbana Jurong Group CEO Sean Chiao. Both sides explored ways to strengthen cooperation and widen partnership opportunities linked to upcoming airport expansion and modernization programs. Jeddah Airports seeks to leverage Surbana Jurong’s global expertise in managing mega infrastructure projects to support its ambitious long-term development strategy.

Under the proposed expansion roadmap, King Abdulaziz International Airport aims to serve more than 90 million passengers annually by 2030. The airport operator also plans to increase annual cargo handling capacity to 2.5 million tons while accommodating 15 million transit passengers. Additionally, Jeddah Airports intends to connect the city with 150 international destinations within the same period.

Industry observers estimate Saudi Arabia’s wider airport development pipeline could exceed $50 billion over the next decade as the Kingdom accelerates investment in aviation infrastructure.

Jeddah Airport Expansion Plans Focus on Infrastructure and Global Connectivity

The Jeddah Airport expansion plans form part of Saudi Arabia’s National Transport and Logistics Strategy, which prioritizes aviation growth, tourism expansion, and international trade connectivity. Authorities continue investing heavily in airports to support increasing demand from business travelers, tourists, and religious pilgrims visiting the Kingdom every year.

During the meeting, Jeddah Airports and Surbana Jurong reviewed future collaboration opportunities across engineering, airport planning, infrastructure management, and project governance. They also discussed integrated operational structures designed to improve the delivery efficiency of future development programs.

Both sides explored governance frameworks for joint project teams, including clear responsibilities and organizational structures to support implementation. Officials also reviewed the possibility of signing a memorandum of understanding to formalize future cooperation and strengthen the long-term strategic partnership.

The airport operator believes the expansion project will strengthen Jeddah’s role as a gateway connecting Asia, Africa, and Europe. The development program also seeks to improve passenger services, operational readiness, and airport infrastructure efficiency.

King Abdulaziz International Airport continues recording strong operational growth. Recent aviation sector reforms and rising tourism demand have increased passenger volumes across Saudi Arabia’s airports. Consequently, authorities continue prioritizing large-scale airport expansion projects to match future traffic growth projections.

Jeddah Airport Expansion Plans Prioritize Saudi Talent Development

The Jeddah Airport expansion plans also emphasize knowledge transfer and local workforce development. Jeddah Airports and Surbana Jurong discussed specialized training initiatives designed to strengthen Saudi expertise in engineering, infrastructure delivery, and project management.

The proposed collaboration includes access to Surbana Jurong Academy programs, mentorship opportunities for Saudi engineers, and participation in international airport development projects. These initiatives aim to transfer technical knowledge while preparing local professionals to lead future aviation infrastructure projects according to global standards.

Jeddah Airports considers talent development a key component of its long-term transformation strategy. Therefore, the company continues investing in programs that support localization and professional capacity building within Saudi Arabia’s aviation and construction sectors.

The airport operator also seeks to maintain service excellence as passenger traffic rises rapidly. Through ongoing modernization programs, the company aims to deliver an improved travel experience while supporting Saudi Arabia’s economic diversification goals.

Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector continues attracting international partners as the Kingdom advances major infrastructure projects under Vision 2030. Jeddah’s airport expansion strategy will likely remain central to national plans aimed at transforming the country into a leading global aviation and logistics destination.

The Jeddah airport expansion reflects a wider regional aviation infrastructure trend seen in the DXB Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project in Dubai, where authorities upgraded runway systems, taxiways, lighting, and operational infrastructure to improve airport capacity, safety, and passenger experience. Dubai Airports completed the 4.5km runway rehabilitation program in 2022 to support rising traffic demand and long-term aviation growth across the Gulf region.
