The proposed $3bn Chicago Bears stadium plans is on the agenda this week as NFL owners meet for next steps. The NFL owners meeting begins Tuesday in Orlando and the Chicago Bears stadium search is one of the key topics. The NFL team aims to construct a new $3bn stadium in the city despite the plan being proposed three years ago. However, Bears CEO Kevin Warren has said the team will have a decision on new stadium plans by “late spring, early summer.”

The Bears are planning to provide the NFL with an update on their future plans at the league’s meeting. The team has said Arlington Heights and Hammond, Indiana, are the only options. If they do stay in the state, Governor JB Pritzker says it will be in Arlington Heights at the former racetrack property the team owns.

If it also not there, they will pursue the offer from Indiana to build a stadium in Hammond. However, as lawmakers consider a so-called megaprojects bill that would give the Bears a property tax break on the new stadium in Arlington Heights, frustration is growing. This comes as Governor Pritzker expressed his frustration at Mayor Brandon Johnson’s Chicago push. Another major NFL stadium that is advancing is the $4bn Washington Commanders stadium as the NFL team makes effort to also return to D.C.

Scope of Implementation on the Chicago Bears Stadium Plans

Frustration over the stall on the Chicago Bears stadium plans seems to be taking its toll. “I know that the mayor has no plan. He has come up with no plan at all about how the Bears would end up in the city of Chicago. So, that’s problematic. I’d love them to be in the city, but we’re three years in now, and he still has no plan,” Pritzker said. Nonetheless, the mayor’s office responded as it noted that it is making advancements on the matter.

“The City’s proposal remains the only plan centered on public ownership alongside a funding mechanism that does not burden property taxpayers while keeping the Bears in Chicago.” Nonetheless, the Bears are proposing a privately financed $2bn+ domed stadium on the 326-acre former Arlington International Racecourse site.

The mega-project would also feature a massive mixed-use entertainment district. However, the major hurdle that remains is that the team needs property tax break legislation passed by the Illinois Senate to make the economics work. While the House passed a bill, it faces hurdles in the Senate and from local educators.
