Epic Academy has received the approval of the Chicago City Council to commence construction on a new facility. The new schooling facility is set to be located at 8231 S. South Shore in the former St. Michael’s school building, which is currently comprised of two residential properties as well as a three-story convent and a one-story auxiliary structure on the south side that will be demolished to make way for the construction of the state-of-the-art school.

JGMA, who are architects, have led the design process, aiming to use the history and past of the previous school, as a springboard for the future. The design, which pays homage to the previous school, includes a fresh and innovative four-story addition that provides a new entry experience to connect the school with the community and make it interesting for the students.

Additionally, the extension will contain areas that link the students, school and nearby families, blending the entire community together. The gymnasium, which has been elevated to the summit of the structure, provides an engaging view and encourages people to interact with the community.

More on Chicago’s Epic Academy Facility

The new extension comprises a terracotta rain screen system covering all of the facades of the building, providing a vertical rhythm that draws from the original structure. The new building’s entrance is angled to provide a vibrant new entry area that faces both the community and the students. In terms of sustainability, the school plans to go above and beyond the energy code, placing solar panels on the roof and exceeding stormwater legislation. Trees will be planted and green roofs created in line with the city’s requirements for sustainable development. The school intends to cut back on indoor water consumption, provide bike parking, protect birds, and be close to public transportation. The new facility is set to open its doors by the year 2024 or 2025, with ongoing fundraising efforts in place to help reach the required amount.
