The Brooks Museum of Art has been a renowned museum for over a century and has recently been renamed.  The groundbreaking event of the new museum took place after nine months of construction work. During the work, the old 1967 fire station that was once the city’s Fire Department HQ was demolished.

Mayor Discusses the Civic Value of the Museum

Mayor Jim Strickland notes that the new museum will become the front porch of the city, bringing in more tourism. He adds that the Brooks Museum of Art is an important civic asset, with the groundbreaking being a strong sign of the city’s growth and increasing private investments.

The Memphis Brooks Museum of Art in Overton Park remains open for visitors until construction in the new museum is finished. The museum leaders expect the construction to be complete by 2025, with the opening of the new facility planned for early 2026. The renowned architecture firm Archimania is responsible for designing the new building, with Grinder Taber Grinder as the general contractor for the project.

The new Memphis Brooks Museum of Art has almost 50% more gallery space than the previous museum. It also has 600% more art-filled, public spaces. The revamped museum includes a community courtyard that spans 10,000 square feet, which is equivalent to almost two full-sized NBA courts. Additionally, the museum’s rooftop offers a large green space that provides an aerial view of the art park. The pavilion and both the courtyard and the rooftop will be accessible to the public.
