Baylor College of Medicine has revealed its plans to build the Cullen Tower, a 503,000-square-foot education and research facility located in Houston, Texas. The new 11-story tower will be built adjacent to Texas Medical Center’s Helix Park campus and will form part of the initial phase of Baylor’s planned Health Sciences Park, an 800,000-square-foot development.

The Cullen Tower project was funded through donations, and the developer aimed to raise $150 million for the project, of which $100 million had already been received in gifts. Also, The Cullen Foundation, Cullen Trust for Health Care, and Cullen Trust for Higher Education contributed $30 million towards the project.

Other donations were received, including $12 million from DeBakey Medical Foundation and $10 million from Huffington Foundation. Baylor’s Board of Trustees and other community donors also contributed over $45 million to the project.

Design of the Cullen Tower Project

The Cullen Tower project is designed by SLAM to include state-of-the-art educational facilities, a courtyard, a common area, small group and studio classroom sizes to encourage active learning. The design plans also include a theater-style event space and a cutting-edge anatomy lab. Simulation and teaching labs will be built to provide practical and immersive learning experiences as well.

Baylor’s President and CEO, Paul Klotman, mentioned that the Cullen Tower project’s main goal was to change the future of health. He said that in order to achieve this goal, they needed a great building to recruit talented individuals. Therefore, Klotman said the project’s location was also significant as it is where clinical programs and data scientists are located. He also pointed out that the facility would be next to the biotech development center, and medical students integrated into that environment would be well-prepared for healthcare in the future.
