Construction of the new $4bn Washington Commanders stadium project plans face setbacks as officials deny key upgrades. The project has suffered a major setback as officials ruled out plans to build a new Metro rail station at the RFK site. The NFL franchise is preparing to return to Washington DC with a stunning $4bn, 70,000-seat domed stadium. Moreover, it is due to open in 2030 with construction plans laid out back in March.

However, transportation chiefs have now revealed they are not recommending a new Metrotrail station in the development scheme. Instead, officials want to introduce a rapid bus service dubbed the “Gold Line.” Its main aim will be to transport fans to and from games and events. The proposed bus route would connect supporters with Union Station and existing rail and bus links across the city.

Metro also warned that significance upgrades will be needed at the current Stadium-Armory station. Another stadium taking shape is the iconic Williams-Brice stadium in South Carolina. Earlier last year, The University of South Carolina forged ahead with a sweeping reimagining of Williams-Brice Stadium, following the USC Board of Trustees’ recent approval to move into the next phase of a $350 million renovation, upgrade plans. Another major sports stadium advancing is the Chicago Fire FC stadium. The stadium is set to be named McDonald’s Park with opening slated for 2028. The fast food franchise acquired naming rights to the new stadium with the deal representing the firm’s first-ever naming rights.

Scope of Implementation on the New Washington Commanders Stadium Project

The New Washington Commanders stadium project is advancing as scheduled but the metro denial may act as a dent to these plans. However, without improvement, officials note that it could take more than two hours to clear crowds after Commanders games and other major events. A new rail station had been considered at locations including Oklahoma Avenue and Benning Road NE.

However, Metro estimates such a project would cost around $1 billion and would not be completed before the stadium’s planned opening. More than half of all fans attending events at the new venue are expected to use public transport. Local residents have also voiced concerns over traffic congestion and parking around the site. The Commanders unveiled fresh renderings of the futuristic stadium earlier this year alongside architecture firm HKS.

The new arena is being built on the site of the old RFK Stadium, where the franchise previously played before leaving DC nearly 30 years ago. The domed venue is expected to host more than 200 events annually and would also be eligible to stage a Super Bowl. Demolition work at the old RFK site is ongoing, with full construction currently scheduled to begin in 2027.
