Richmond International Airport in Virginia is making headway in the implementation of its $253.1 million expansion plan. Dubbed Wheels Up 2030, the airport aims to expand the airport to accommodate new passengers and destinations in coming years. The scope entails transforming the airport from its Federal Aviation Administration designation as a small hub airport to a medium-sized.

Moreover, it seeks to be able to handle up to 1% of the nation’s annual passenger boardings. Capital Region Airport Commissioner President and CEO Perry Miller noted the project is a commendable step. He noted it is a ““a really big game changer” for the airport and the region as a whole.” Once complete, it is expected to attract flyers and economic development traditionally lost to Washington Dulles and Regan National airports.

The airport is also making progress on other projects that are expected to be completed this summer. This include dining options and more restrooms. Outside, the Center Core Plaza is undergoing a $5.1 million renovation to allow for more events and EV charging. Airports across various states in the U.S. are making commendable steps to expand or build new infrastructure that could accommodate the ever burgeoning numbers of passengers annually. One such project is the Pittsburgh International Airport in which their ambitious modernization project is now complete, marking a major step toward opening a new $1.72 billion terminal opened last year in November.

Scope of Implementation on the Richmond International Airport Expansion Plan

The main scope of implementation on the Richmond International Airport expansion plan is a consolidated security screening checkpoint. It will merge two separate areas into one central location. Moreover, it will include renovations to many other parts of the airport. Architectural renderings show a redesigned atrium, expanded concessions, glass elevators and curved digital walls designed for arriving passengers.

Once a winning bid finalizing the design is selected this summer, construction is expected to take at least three years and cost $253.1 million. Miller also noted passengers will be able to expect a “friendly, efficient process” on the way to their destinations. Design is also underway on a 200-acre RIC site on Beulah Road to ready it for development, potentially by an aerospace user.

The Henrico Economic Development Authority is using a $1 million state site readiness grant. The additions come as the airport in 2025 set new annual highs for passengers (4.92 million) and cargo (223 million pounds). However, those records could soon be exceeded as RIC adds flights to Atlanta and Denver via Frontier Airlines and a nonstop trip to Puerto Rico on JetBlue Airways.
