The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has allocated a record-breaking $1.47 billion in funding for infrastructure projects, including roads and bridges, in the fiscal year 2022-23, which ended on June 30th. This investment has been utilized for 839 different projects. To provide transparency, the DOT has released a breakdown of how the funds have been distributed.

Stu Anderson, a representative from the Iowa DOT, acknowledges the vast infrastructure needs across the state at both the DOT, city, and county levels. He highlights the impact of the federal infrastructure bill passed in 2021, stating that its funding increases will be fully realized in 2023. As an example, Anderson mentions an ongoing project to expand Interstate 35 to six lanes from Ankeny to just north of the Iowa 210 interchange.

There are numerous projects taking place in central Iowa. One major initiative is the widening of I-35 to six lanes from Ankeny to Story County. Additionally, there are plans to construct a freeway-style exit into Nevada from Highway 30. Local businesses in Nevada are welcoming this upgrade for the town’s benefit. DOT projections indicate that similar or increased funding will be dedicated to Iowa’s roads and bridges in the upcoming year.

The infrastructure investments awarded by the Iowa DOT for fiscal year 2023 include:

1. Farm-to-Market System – $274.5 million

This investment ensures the smooth transportation of goods produced within the state to the global marketplace.

2. Interstate System – $358 million

This investment is crucial for maintaining the efficient flow of products throughout the state.

3. Secondary System – $26.8 million

These funds aim to improve roadway conditions by providing smoother pavements and better markings, enhancing commuter safety and comfort.

4. Urban Roads and Bridges – $136.8 million

This investment ensures the quick and efficient transportation of families to various activities, medical appointments, shopping, and more.
